I had a good opportunity to hear a lecture by Kare I had a good opportunity to hear a lecture by Karen Ladd land, a three time Iditarod racer and musher. She raced for 12 to 16 days inn +50/-50F degrees. Are dogs needed 10,000 cal per day (Mainly from beaver meat and grocery store excess) and many pairs of booties to protect their feet. She talked about #nutrition, and care for the dogs and how they are breeding smaller dogs now. It doesn’t matter what they look like. They aren’t all huskies. They’re using medium size dogs with smaller coats because the weather isn’t always as cold, and overheating is the main problem for dog races. The dogs sleep on straw daily which the racer carries. Everything the racer needs has to be carried on their sled- no outside help allowed. Racers do help each other, though. She goes through 1000’s of dog booties. The fastest race was 9 days! Apparently the racers start out from Anchorage but then restart the race the next day from a separate location. She also mentioned a hobby on dryland called dryland machine. The dog or dogs pull a thing that looks like a bike without pedals or a cart. That looks super fun!! This talk was super interesting and I’m glad I braved the cold-weather to go and listen to her. This is a new food at 7-11. I was super excited to This is a new food at 7-11. I was super excited to see chicken skin as a snack food, much like chicharones. But these are not a good idea. Several of these are fried in vegetable, including canola oil. All vegetable oils are bad- being toxic and carcinogenic- but canola is more. It’s so toxic that it cause diarrhea in some, and has been prohibited in baby formula, because it will kill them through lack of absorption. Price $7.59 for 1-2.5 oz
